The Department of Literacy, Early, Bilingual, and Special Education (LEBSE) in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development at the California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic year position as an Assistant Professor in Bilingual/Bicultural and Biliteracy Education (Hmong Language) beginning August 2022. The primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Bilingual Authorization Program (BAP) with specialization in the Hmong language, Asian/Pacific Islander/Southeast Asian culture, and literacy. The successful candidate will demonstrate an asset-based (anti-deficit) perspective on multilingualism and have broad knowledge of bilingual/dual immersion education, translanguaging, raciolinguistics, biliteracy, biculturalism, applied linguistics, first and second language acquisition theories, TK-12 emergent bilingual children, and sociopolitical issues surrounding policies and language learning.

Qualifications:

 Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):

  1. A doctorate in Education with an emphasis in bilingualism and biliteracy, Hmong language, and culture and/or closely related disciplines is required.
  2. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. The doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment in August 2022.

Required Experience:

  1. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  2. Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in elementary and/or secondary classrooms;
  3. Direct experience working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners in educational settings;
  4. Bilingual and biliterate in Hmong and English.

Preferred Experience:

  1. Knowledge and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in urban and rural settings;
  2. Ability to teach courses in bilingual and multicultural education methodology;
  3. Experience teaching at a HSI/MSI campus; and
  4. Evidence of scholarly activity.

The Kremen School of Education and Human Development’s mission is recruitment and development of ethically informed leaders for classroom teaching, education administration, counseling, and higher education. This NCATE-accredited unit fosters the candidate dispositions of collaboration, valuing diversity, critical thinking, ethical judgments, reflection, and lifelong learning. Kremen School of Education and Human Development (KSOEHD) prepares highly competent educators and human development specialists, while providing professional support and leadership to the community, promoting applied research, and providing experiences and opportunities that will enable employed professionals to remain current in their fields.

The Fresno State Bilingual Authorization Program (BAP) embraces and celebrates the bi/multilingualism and bi/multiculturalism of preK-12 children and families, pre-service teachers, teacher candidates, and in-service teachers in California’s Central Valley. We adopt a “grow your own” approach to filling the increasing need in our region for future bilingual/dual immersion teachers. The BAP approaches the preparation of future teachers from a world languages/dialects and translanguaging perspective that represents cutting-edge research on bilingual and emergent bilingual students. We affirm, validate, and centralize culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies, such as the translanguaging skills of the community, and we prepare teacher candidates that embody this same stance. The BAP program offers both Spanish and Hmong pathways for students pursuing their initial teaching credentials to become authorized to teach in bilingual/dual immersion classrooms and is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
