Geography and City & Regional Planning Department programs are designed to train students so they can be equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to be competitive in the global market and have a successful career as an urban and regional planner, GIS analyst, data and mapping consultant, information specialist, climatologist, natural and resources specialist, environmental consultant state/local public health/social services administrator, diplomat, teacher and economic researcher.
Our department has one of the most diverse faculty in the California State University System. This is especially important considering the faculty, staff and students at Fresno State University are from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our faculty members are currently engaged in research projects that address problems that not only affect our life here in the San Joaquin Valley, but which may also affect life elsewhere in the world. Our majors have the opportunities to work on faculty projects as paid student research assistants and attend local and national conferences.
The University Coach (Supervisor) is a faculty member of the Geography Department, but supervises Teacher Credential Candidates for all social science content areas (World History, U.S. History, Economics, or Government). They are assigned Teacher Credential Candidates by the Single Subject Social Sciences Program Coordinator. Serving as a liaison between the University and the cooperating schools, they provide the schools with information about the Teacher Credential Candidates and the Single Subject program. In turn, they communicate the cooperating schools' suggestions and their needs to the University for the improvement of the Single Subject Teacher Education Program.
Single Subject University Coaches (Supervisors) are experts in a Social Sciences Discipline and should have recent professional and/or teaching experiences in a school setting where the curriculum aligns with the History-Social Sciences Framework and the school reflects the diversity of California's student population. The University Coach (Supervisor) should have current knowledge of supervision approaches such as cognitive coaching, adult learning theory, and current "content-specific" pedagogy and instructional practices. All University Coaches (Supervisors will be evaluated by their Teacher Credential Candidates at the end of the semester. Evaluation results will be placed in one's Faculty Personnel Action File (PAF).

Instructor Responsibility: Temporary faculty members are responsible for adherence to and implementation of university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2. Instructor are will be responsible for the preparation, delivery, conducting, proctoring, and grading (as appropriate) lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class project, and midterm and final exams.
Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary. Appointments from the pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The pool will remain in place for two academic terms; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply.
- Spring 2022: January 18, 2022 - May 21, 2022;
- Primary instruction will be on-campus as Fresno State repopulates during Fall 2021 according to CDC guidelines. Limited to no online courses available for assignment.
Appointees will be required to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States (Fresno State is not a sponsoring agency for Temporary Faculty positions).
Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
Single Subject University Coaches (Supervisors) must possess:
(1) A clear single subject social science teaching credential
(2) A master's degree in education or the social sciences
- Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- A minimum of three years experience teaching social science
