Compensation and Benefits

Salary is competitive and negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a full-time, exempt CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

California State University, Fresno (Fresno State), a prominent member of the 23 campuses of the California State University system, seeks a collaborative, experienced, and visionary leader to serve as its next Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (VP). Reporting to the President, and working in collaboration with the University Cabinet, other senior leadership, faculty, students, and staff, the VP will join the University at a pivotal time to have a transformational impact on the campus - a new Strategic Plan 2022-2027 is in the process of being written. The VP will have extensive experience in student affairs and enrollment management with a genuine desire to serve the Central Valley community and its students, and to provide a welcoming and engaged student experience for ensuring sustainable enrollment and a sense of belonging for a highly diverse student body.

Today, more than 24,000 students attend the 388-acre main campus, located in Fresno, California, at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountain range. A dynamic, community-engaged university, Fresno State serves a student body where more than half of its student population are from historically underrepresented populations. The University has been designated as a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution (AANAPISI), reflecting the ethnic and cultural richness of the Central Valley in California. Fresno State has been awarded the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education and has recently been elevated to “Doctoral University - High Research Activity” or R2 status. The VP will join Fresno State at an important moment as a new President seeks to propel the University to greater heights. The University welcomed its ninth president, Dr. Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval in May 2021 and he is now building out his leadership team. Dr. Jiménez-Sandoval began his career at Fresno State, joining the faculty as a professor of Spanish and Portuguese in 2000. Later, he served as Dean of Arts and Humanities before his appointment as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2019.

The University community is ready to be inspired and energized by a VP who can provide transparent, collaborative leadership and administrative direction to a Division and University dedicated to building community and advancing the goal of student success. The Division has had interim leadership for the past two years, and they are poised for a permanent VP to establish continuity and set the path for future goals and aspirations. Working closely with Academic Affairs, the VP will lead efforts in proactively, efficiently, and more seamlessly recruit students, while supporting student needs and breaking down systemic barriers to success.  The new leader will ensure that Fresno State continues to make good progress towards its strategic enrollment and student success objectives and the CSU System’s Graduation Initiative 2025 (GI 2025). 

The next VP will serve as an advocate and champion for all students while building on the University’s many successes, leveraging institutional assets, and cultivating strong leaders in the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. In doing so, the VP will be instrumental in efforts to advance and meet the following key priorities and challenges:

  • Develop and implement a new strategic plan for the Division in alignment with the University Strategic Plan 2022-2027
  • Augment the student experience in close partnership with Academic Affairs to foster more seamless student services, reduce equity gaps for current students, recruit and retain student populations currently underserved by Fresno State, and enhance student engagement and support
  • Serve as a visible advocate for students while ensuring a supportive, inclusive campus environment
  • Build the trust and respect of a team of passionate student affairs and enrollment management professionals, and inspire and support them in providing a transformational student experience
  • Creatively and intentionally steward financial resources


Qualifications and Characteristics

The successful candidate for the VP will be a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative leader with a record of supporting a diverse student body. While no one person may embody all, the successful candidate will also bring many of the following professional qualifications and personal qualities:

  • A master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, education administration, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field and at least five (5) years of experience serving as a member of the senior leadership team within student affairs is required; a doctoral degree is preferred;
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices in student affairs and enrollment management administration;
  • A proven commitment to the social mobility of students;
  • Demonstrated experience with budget management, the supervision of a large staff, staff development and empowerment, and ensuring a nimble organizational infrastructure;
  • Knowledge of effective enrollment management strategies and how they inform student success;
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective partnerships with academic affairs and other areas across an institution;
  • Experienced in crisis management;
  • Knowledge and experience working effectively with varied student populations including first-generation students; students of color; students from various socio-economic backgrounds; students from diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds; students with disabilities; veterans; LGBT+; undocumented students; Dreamers; former foster youth; and students pursuing degrees at various stages in their careers and lives;
  • A record of success in the recruitment and retention of a diverse student body;
  • A track record of a high level of visibility in the University community;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the creation and development of a diverse and inclusive workplace and willingness to take actions to ensure an environment that is welcoming and equitable to people from all backgrounds and experience levels;
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively listen to all points of view, build consensus, and inform others of policies and plans;
  • Strong personal orientation toward collaboration, teamwork, accessibility, accountability, and a growth mindset;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of shared governance and transparency;
  • Experience working in a unionized environment;
  • Ability to lead with humility and empathy.
