Academic Counselor
(Student Services Professional II)

Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $4,610 per month

Full CSU Classification Salary Range:  $4,610 - $6,556 per month

  • This is a full-time, probationary, exempt position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of EOP, the incumbent provides counseling and advising services to support the academic, personal, and social development of an assigned caseload of students.

 

Key Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities associated with providing counseling and advising services to students.
  • Knowledge of research and interviewing techniques and the principles of individual and group behaviors.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to issues encountered by at-risk students.
  • Knowledge of study techniques and retention intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of computer office equipment and systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, and software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications).
  • Skill/Ability to:
    • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to support student success.
    • Demonstrate planning, organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to present clear and concise information both orally and in written form.
    • Interpret and apply program and university rules and regulations.
    • Effectively manage multiple tasks and work in a team-oriented environment.
    • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
    • Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data.
    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas within Student Affairs.
    • Interact with and provide professional services to students and maintain a collegial working relationship with faculty, and other support staff.
    • Work with diverse student populations and advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
    • Demonstrated ability to deal appropriately with confidential information and exercise good judgment on sensitive matters.
    • Understand and abide with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and State of California policy regarding the confidentiality of records
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the university community.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences or job-related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in a student service program or in a related field providing counseling and advising service; experience should give evidence of competence and indicates the potential for further growth.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
    • Preferred Skills:
      • Experience in the use of PeopleSoft Student Administration System.
      • Experience in the use of EAB Student Success Management System (Bulldog Connect).
      • Adequate writing and communication skills and ability to interact with students, faculty, and other support staff.
