Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) – The Learning Center – Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader  

Instructional Student Assistant for the Learning Center

The Learning Center is seeking applicants to fill Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader positions.

Position Overview:

Fresno State’s Learning Center is a space that encourages students to grow intellectually as critical thinkers. We advance student success by actively using effective learning strategies to improve content understanding and course grades. SI Leaders do not teach, but instead, facilitate students' learning of difficult topics within historically challenging courses or subjects. The Learning Center aims to boldly integrate the culture and values of each student to inspire a community of life-long learners.

Please see below for key characteristics associated with the position of a Learning Center SI Leader: 

  • Supports students and professors in a specific course or section (example: CHEM 1A with Professor Gray)
  • Must work 13-15 hours a week, divided into 30-minute to 3- hour tasks, 3-5 days a week
  • Drives the agenda of 90-minute study sessions
  • Works most hours in a classroom, with office hours in the Learning Center
  • Must be able to attend class lectures (in-person and/or virtual) for the supporting course

Anticipated Appointment Dates: This position is opened until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified.

Fall 2023: August 17, 2023 - December 22, 2023; anticipated start date August 10th

Spring 2024: January 16, 2024 - May 18, 2024; anticipated start date January 8th

Hours: Students can work up to 20-hours per week (across all campus positions).

Job Duties: May include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course to which the SI Leader will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the course faculty member(s) and Learning Center staff:

  • Prepare events, material, and references for students
  • Perform individual and/or group academic support
  • Plan and facilitate outreach and marketing efforts to recruit students  
  • Attend all scheduled training, meeting dates, and class lectures

Qualifications for SI Leader Position:

  • Must be enrolled in 6 units at Fresno State
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Must have passed specific course(s) you are applying for with a grade B or better. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  1. Class schedule: Upload a copy of your class schedule for the semester you are seeking employment. Please note, if you have not yet registered for your next semester courses, you may skip this upload and submit the application.
  1. Current unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate and graduate education.  If you have attended more than one institution, please copy and combine these transcripts into one document. How to submit your unofficial transcripts:
    1. If you are a Fresno State student:  Sign into  Access your Unofficial Transcript.  Highlight all text throughout the document, copy it and paste it into a word processor document, and save the document with your name somewhere in the file name. 
    2. If you are not yet a Fresno State student:  Most U.S. universities allow students to access their academic records online, in a way similar to the way described above for Fresno State students.  Contact your institution’s registrar to find out how to access your unofficial transcript and follow the process described above.  If you have transcripts from more than one institution, please copy them all and paste them into one document, as PageUp only allows one document to be uploaded into the link for transcripts.  Make certain that each institution is clearly indicated within this document.

Instruction Student Assistant additional information regarding assignment:

The California State University Instructional Student Assistant Classification and Qualification Standards

  • Evaluations: ISA's may be evaluated per CBA, Unit 11, Article 8 
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The Salary range for Instructional Student Assistants starts at $16.20 per an hour.
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the candidate.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11, a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department Instructional Student Assistant position.
  • Instructional Student Assistant positions are for matriculated students at Fresno State. 
  • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.
