Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,787 - $5,902 per month

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,787 - $8,430 per month

  • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of the Office of Innovation and Digital Excellence for Student Success (IDEAS), the Digital Accessibility Specialist will provide a broad variety of entry-level professional services to support accessibility systems analysis at the university. Many of these services will support CSU Accessibility Technology Initiative (ATI) goals and key success indicators. Duties include, but are not limited to, support for digital materials in the university learning management system (Canvas), online documents, instructional materials, and media accessibility remediation, accessible procurement support, and analysis and reporting needs. The Digital Accessibility Specialist will also provide training and consultation with faculty on topics relating to universal design and accessibility. The incumbent may also support communication and awareness needs within the campus community, vendors, and the CSU system.

 

Key Qualifications

  • General knowledge of accessibility standards, guidelines, and regulations.
  • General knowledge of principles and concepts of accessibility technology applications.
  • Knowledge of user research such as surveys, interviews, and usability testing.
  • Ability to use accessibility evaluation tools and software.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to gather information from faculty, effectively communicate technical issues, and produce documentation.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive data and information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Analytical skills to collect, analyze, and interpret application process problems and technology needs.
  • Respond well to direction, embrace feedback, and champion change.
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills to communicate and work collaboratively with all levels and roles within an organization, and members of the community in one-to-one or group settings.
  • Organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks and projects under competing deadlines and maintain flexibility in response to constantly shifting priorities.
  • Strong characteristics of integrity, excellence, discretion, team-orientation, service-orientation.
  • Proficient use of standard campus applications, desktops, and laptops.
  • Apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations, technical training and user documentation.
  • Create and maintain program data for review in developing and implementing strategies and activities to enhance processes and meet programmatic goals.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
    • Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
    • Hands-on experience and knowledge of:
      • Accessibility practices and assistive technologies, including specific software and hardware for testing accessibility.
      • Alternate media production techniques in related assistive technologies.
      • Accessibility computer technologies for blind, low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, physically disabled and learning-disabled students.
      • Program development and evaluation methods.
      • Disability law, including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
      • PDF remediation and related principles utilizing Adobe Acrobat DC or other available tools.
      • Assistive technologies NVDA, VoiceOver, etc. on multiple computing platforms.
      • WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and guidelines.
      • Accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes.
      • Canvas LMS; and the ability to understand CSS, HTMLS, and other web development languages as related to accessibility conformance testing.

 

Department Summary

The Office of IDEAS (Innovation and Digital Excellence for Academic Success) consolidates the Center for Faculty Excellence, DISCOVERe, Academic Technology Resource Center and the Accessible Resource Center under one umbrella administered by the Provost's Office. The office ensures that faculty and students have outstanding support for Canvas, Explorance, Panopto, Zoom and much more. IDEAS will continue the tradition of providing high-level professional development opportunities in the areas of open educational resources, accessible course content, technology, innovation, and pedagogy.
