Position Description

    • Position Summary
    • Part-time (30 hours a week / FTE 0.75) temporary position available on or after December 16, 2024 and ending on or before December 15, 2025 in Endangered Species Recovery Program (ESRP) at the Bakersfield site. Appointment will be made for one year from date of hire with the possibility of reappointment based on budget, department needs, and job performance.


      Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Endangered Species Recovery Program (ESRP), the Research Technician I will participate in research projects focused on the conservation and recovery of endangered animal and plant species in the San Joaquin Valley and various other locations across central California. While the position is based at the ESRP office in Bakersfield, California, fieldwork will be conducted at distributed sites throughout the region.

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Conduct field research activities for wildlife and habitat conservation projects.
      • Assist in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
      • Use radio telemetry techniques for tracking wildlife.
      • Perform surveys to assess species and habitat conditions.
      • Manage data entry, proofing, organization, and summarization.
      • Support office operations including equipment maintenance and administrative tasks.
      • Other duties as assigned.

    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education:  Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university, including or supplemented by a course in statistics. Additional experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the
      knowledge and abilities delineated below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

      Experience:  One year of experience in technical research or statistical work. One year of graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration, or engineering fields may be substituted for the required experience.

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, or related field.
      • Minimum of 2 years of relevant fieldwork experience in wildlife research, conservation, or related areas.
      • Experience with handling threatened and endangered wildlife species, sample collection, and field surveys.
      • Familiarity with radio telemetry techniques and data collection protocols.
      • Experience conducting food diet analysis in scat samples.
      • Experience with remote camera operation and camera surveys.
    • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

      • Working knowledge of research techniques and the methods of preparation of research reports;
      • Working knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of frequency series, data, simple correlation methods, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers.
      • Ability to assist in preparation of questionnaires, gathering and analyzing research data, and in compiling data for reports and summaries in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form.
      • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports;
      • Ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action;
      • Ability to speak and write effectively.

    • Special Conditions

      • This position is based in Bakersfield, CA, with field sites distributed throughout central California.
      • Work will be conducted in both field and office environments.
      • Occasional night and weekend work may be required.
      • Occasional overnight travel, including camping at remote field sites, may be required.
      • Expectations for attire include clothing suitable for hiking, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and boots/closed-toed shoes.
      • Potentially hazardous conditions include high temperatures, poor air quality, precipitation, uneven terrain, biting insects, and rattlesnakes.
      • Transport and use heavy/bulky equipment (up to 40 lbs.) under field conditions, including wire cage traps, small mammal trap boxes, kit fox traps, telemetry equipment, and excavation tools.
      • Hike up to 12 miles per day over rough and steep terrain.
      • Work in all weather conditions, including rain, fog, intense sun, hot and cold temperatures.
    • Salary Range
    • Anticipated salary will be $2,760 - $3,036 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full range: $2,760 - 4,971 per month)
