Job Summary
In addition to performing skilled locksmith work, the Lead Locksmith works under the Supervisor Locksmith and is responsible for providing lead work direction to a small group or crew of skilled Locksmiths, other skilled crafts workers and their assistants as well as the planning, design and oversight of the implementation and maintenance of a campus-wide master lock and key program.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in supervising, scheduling and providing leadership to a crew of skilled Locksmiths and Maintenance Mechanics. Examines work and ensure compliance with specifications, special instructions and integrity of security systems. Serves as on-campus authoritative source of information on matters pertaining to locks, locking systems and fastening devices.
- Perform a full range of skilled locksmith work including the installation, repair, remodel and maintenance of manual and automated locks, locking systems and security devices; low voltage computerized access control systems; and door openers,
- closers and hardware.
- Prepares cost estimates and maintains records.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the locksmithing trade, including recognized safety practices. General knowledge of the California State codes relating to fire exits, door locks, hardware and fastening devices. Thorough knowledge of all types of locks, fastening devices and related hardware; including electronic locks. Ability to establish and implement a great grand, grand, or master keying system in a new building structure with multiple departmental occupancy and separate keying needs. Ability to determine staffing, material and equipment needs for individual jobs. Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of skilled crafts workers and semi-skilled workers. Ability to read blueprints and work from plans and specifications. Ability to analyze emergency situations accurately and take prompt actions. Ability to keep records and prepare simple reports. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Ability to make arithmetic computations where required.

Education and Experience
- Equivalent to a high school diploma and one to two years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that included lead work coordination responsibilities and training in master key systems required.
- Equivalent to three or more years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that includes lead work coordination and execution of responsibilities in project estimating and execution, assisting and providing quality control of contracted services in a university setting, experience with electronic lock hardware and software systems and training in master key systems preferred.
- Certification in Locksmithing from a credited institution preferred.
- Formal training or certification in organizational leadership or management development preferred.
- Bachelor’s or master’s Degree preferred.
Physical Summary
Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,998 - $8,737 per month.

Time Base
1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
Duration of Appointment
This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
