PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Facilities Maintenance and Operations and the day-to-day work direction of the Facilities Project Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for the full range of skilled journey-level metal work by performing a variety of metal and machine work for preventive maintenance on facilities, systems, equipment, structures and fixtures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Metal Shop Support:  Performs skilled journey-level metal work in creating drawings and blueprints and then using journey level skills and knowledge to lay out and fabricate structural steel and sheet metal to build metal structures, duct work modification, metal repair, and installation of roof gutters; heating, ventilation and air conditioning ducts as well as other items crafted from metal materials. Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to campus facilities and appurtenances, and University Fixtures and equipment.  Responsible for estimating the cost of material and/or machine work for each work order relating to metal work.  May be involved in selecting, ordering, and storing of metal working, machining and fabrications materials, supplies and equipment.  Also, responsible to keep accurate records and retrieve data relating to the work performed using the facilities record-keeping system. 

Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations which may include the work performed by contractors. 

Maintains cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of the shop, tools and equipment.  Maintains compliance with all safety policies/procedures, directives and regulations as applicable to the metal shop and campus facilities.  Work may also involve exposure to hazardous materials.

Work performed may fall into the following three areas:

HVAC Ductwork Fabrication and Installation -  Involves sizing and selecting ductwork and fittings based on CFM, velocity and static pressure requirements; the layout and fabrication of custom fittings; and the fabrication and installation of sheet metal components.

Sheet Metal Construction and Repair for Architectural and Non-Structural Metal Work -  Involves using triangulation, radial parallel and shop mathematics to develop patterns, shapes and parts; cutting, welding, brazing, and soldering of sheet metals; installing, maintaining, inspecting and repairing sheet metal parts; and developing, forming and fashioning sheet metals into various sheet metal objects such as gutters and downspouts, air handling equipment, roof flashing, hand rails and related non-structural equipment and fixtures.

Machine Shop Work - Involves operating and maintaining machine tools used in the construction and repair of parts, tools, equipment and fixtures.

  • Maintenance Support:  Operates, tests, installs, repairs and performs corrective and preventive maintenance on buildings and equipment including HVAC and plumbing systems; mechanical systems, shop equipment, domestic water systems, sewer systems, carpentry and cabinetry, painting, wall systems (doors/windows) roofing systems and commercial food service appliances.  Performs basic electrical maintenance and repair work including work on low voltage control systems. Responds to routine maintenance and service requests as dispatched by work control and Supervisor. Uses computerized maintenance systems, including preventive maintenance systems to ensure maintenance department objectives are met.  Maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed on various buildings, equipment and service information using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; keeps detailed records of work finished.  Operates and maintains computer-controlled HVAC system.

May coordinate and integrate work with other trades, facility workers, and Facilities Planning on a sporadic and infrequent bases.  The incumbent will regularly interact  and coordinate work with the Facilities Customer Service staff.  Consults with and provides support to, and engages in cross training with other Skilled Crafts workers.

Performs a wide range of facilities renovation, maintenance, and repair work; estimates costs of materials and labor; determines the priority for requisitioning parts, materials, equipment, tools, and supplies.

Maintains a safe and clean work environment, to include assigned tools, equipment, and vehicle in good working order, and enters equipment and service information into computer maintenance management system. Provides instruction and direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

Other Functions:

  1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  2. Rotates call back shifts (after-hours) with other Facilities Maintenance staff.
  3. Safely analyze and respond to emergency situations.
  4. Communicates through computer e‑mail, central computer calendar system, telephone voice mail systems and two‑way radio systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in a wide variety of metal and machine work including cutting, welding, brazing, soldering, layout, sheet metal brake, and/or machine shop work; thorough knowledge of the composition, characteristics and uses of ferrous metals, nonferrous metals and alloys and/or various sheet metals; thorough knowledge of installation standards for low, medium, and high pressure ductwork; and working knowledge of state safety orders applicable to metal work, including Safety

Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California. Positions involved in HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation require a thorough understanding of SMACNA duct construction and installation standards for low, medium and high pressure ductwork. Some positions may require an understanding of seismic bracing and vibration isolation.

Abilities: Must be able to lay out, develop and perform welding and sheet metal work; operate welding and fabricating equipment and perform arc and acetylene welding and brazing; size and select ductwork fittings; operate machine tools and equipment; make rough sketches and estimate the costs of materials and labor; interpret and read blueprints and work from plans and specifications; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; use mathematics and geometry in metal working calculations; and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible

training and experience as a welder, sheet metal worker or machinist which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

May be required to possess applicable certification for metal or welding work performed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The abilities normally would be acquired through six years of experience as a journey-level welder that included creating a Welding Shop.  Ability to prioritize assigned tasks; follow procedural oral and written directions; communicate effectively, both written and orally, with faculty, staff, students, consultants and contractors; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multi-cultural environment. Familiarity with desktop computers and word processing software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (e.g., TMA); and working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations. 

Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent <student/finance> information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.  

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
