Position Summary
The Health Educator – Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) is under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Disability Access and Student Well-being.
Responsible for advancing a comprehensive, evidence-informed approach to alcohol and other drug prevention, education, and harm reduction within a university setting. This position leads and supports initiatives that promote student health, safety, and academic success by addressing substance use through public health and equity-centered lens.
While this role maintains a primary focus on AOD prevention and related student support efforts, the Health Educator is also an integral member of the health promotion team and is expected to contribute to broader campus-wide health education initiatives, including mental health promotion, violence prevention, sexual health, and overall student wellness.
Position Information
Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Education & Prevention
- Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive AOD education and prevention strategy aligned with university priorities, federal and state guidelines, and best practices in higher education
- Deliver engaging, culturally responsive AOD workshops and presentations for students, student organizations, residence halls, orientation programs, and university events
- Provide education on topics including alcohol use, cannabis, prescription drug misuse, other substances, overdose prevention, and harm reduction strategies
- Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Counseling Services, Student Health Services, Residence Life, Athletics, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Public Safety) to support coordinated AOD prevention efforts
- The incumbent will provide lead work direction, training, and support, as the position does not appear to have formal supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current in higher education, public health, and AOD prevention practices
- Keep current with practices and trends in health education, especially those practices pertinent to a large urban multicultural University like SF State.
- Collect, analyze, and report program outcomes and assessment data to evaluate effectiveness and inform continuous improvement
- Assist with compliance-related education efforts (e.g., Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act) as appropriate
- Maintain accurate program documentation, reports, and data tracking
- Contribute to grant-funded initiatives or special projects related to prevention and student well-being
- Support early intervention initiatives, screenings, brief educational interventions, and referral pathways, consistent with role scope and institutional protocols
- Monitor trends in student substance use, national AOD research, and emerging issues impacting college populations
- Serve on campus committees or working groups related to student health, safety, and prevention
General Health Education & Health Promotion
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of broader health education initiatives beyond AOD, including mental health promotion, stress management, violence prevention, sexual health, and holistic wellness
- Support or co-facilitate campus-wide health promotion campaigns, trainings, and outreach events
- Develop inclusive educational materials, digital content, and messaging that reflect student needs and institutional values
- Participate in cross-training and collaborative programming within the health promotion and student well-being team

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education. General knowledge of, or the ability to learn quickly, current and emerging college age student health problems and existing methods of intervention and control. Working knowledge of the principles of educational and social psychology and how these apply to health education program; and applicable industry standards and practices for health promotion such as those found in the American College Health Association’s “Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education”.
Abilities:
Ability to assess needs and establish or recommend program priorities and goals and develop plans to achieve goals; collect, compile, chart, and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning; plan, organize, conduct or oversee a variety of health education program and activities including discussion groups and workshops; develop educational materials and media such as pamphlets, audio and video materials, and electronic media; present ideas and information accurately, effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing; use computer and web-based information technology systems as a resource for research and providing health education programs; maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable laws and regulations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, students, medical, and other health professionals, representatives of the news media, and other community groups.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related health field. Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

- Master’s degree in public health, higher education, health education, or a related field
