Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,610 - $4,841 per month

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month

  • This is a full-time, probationary, exempt position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

As part of a team of academic counselors in the Jordan College Advising and Career Development Center, and under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Jordan College, the incumbent provides counseling and advising services to assist students in achieving their educational and personal goals at California State University, Fresno and specifically within the Jordan College.

This position is responsible for providing academic advisement and counseling services to support student transition to the university and retention through graduation.

 

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a university college or advising center.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques.
  • General knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Knowledge of computer office equipment and systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, and software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications).
  • Skill/Ability to:
    • Interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
    • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
    • Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews.
    • Reason logically.
    • Collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
    • Advise diverse student populations individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
    • Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
    • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of CSU Fresno.
    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program and service areas.
    • Demonstrated ability to deal appropriately with confidential information and exercise good judgment on sensitive matters.
    • Effectively organize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
    • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for year basis
  • Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. 
    • A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Master's Degree in education, leadership, or one of the behavioral sciences.
    • Knowledge of study skills and retention intervention strategies.
    • Working knowledge of transfer policies and procedures and admission requirements.
    • Working knowledge of evaluating transcripts and computation of GPA’s.
    • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
    • Experience in the use of PeopleSoft Student Information System.
    • Experience with First-Year Experience programs.
