Position Overview:

The Writing Center in the Department of English is seeking Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) applicants. 

Students from all graduate and undergraduate disciplines are encouraged to apply. The Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) serves as a trained student-peer Writing Center tutor. Writing Center tutors support Fresno State students’ development as writers with (1) semester-long small writing groups, and (2) appointments for 30 minute or 1-hour one-on-one tutoring sessions. To support the writing needs of students, the tutors are required to attend two-day orientations at the beginning of the fall and one day orientations during the spring semesters. Additionally, tutors will be required to attend a weekly, professional development (paid) class for each semester of tutoring that supports tutors learning best writing center practices. 

The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign Instructional Student Assistants to the courses that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.

Anticipated Appointment Dates: This position is opened until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified.

Fall 2025: August 18, 2025 - December 22, 2025

Spring 2026: January 15, 2026 - May 22, 2026

Hours: 0-20 hours per week.

Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the needs of the Writing Center, as well as upon the specific needs and guidance of the Writing Center Director and / or Writing Center Co-Assistant Directors. As a student-peer tutor,

  • Facilitate small group(s) and / or one-on-one session(s)
  • Maintain clear records and attendance of all Writing Center student / client interactions
  • Assess writing needs of students/clients and give feedback on brainstorming, writing drafts, revising and editing, understanding assignments, making meaning through a reading, managing the writing process, cultivating response techniques. 
  • Maintain best Writing Center pedagogical practices, by actively seeking guidance from the Writing Center Director and / or Writing Center Co-Assistant Directors. 
  • Attend the Writing Center orientations (fall and spring semesters), as well as enroll in, attend, and pass the weekly, 1 unit practicum course (Thursdays 4:00-5:50pm). 

Qualifications:

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, ability, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Show serious and consistent commitment to the Writing Center.
  • Have completed First-Year writing course(s) (English 5B or 10) or equivalent coursework 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of 60 units of undergraduate academic coursework
  • Desire to learn best practices of Writing Center Pedagogy and Administration.

Curriculum Vita, or résumé.  Your Curriculum Vita, or CV, is the academic equivalent of a résumé.  It should contain your contact information, your employment and educational history, skills such as computer programming, familiarity with commonly used computer programs, as well as internships, awards, volunteer service, training and any other experience you have that is relevant to education.
  2. Current unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate and graduate education.  If you have attended more than one institution, please copy and combine these transcripts into one document. How to submit your unofficial transcripts:
    1. If you are a Fresno State student:  Sign into https://my.fresnostate.edu.  Access your Unofficial Transcript.  Highlight all text throughout the document, copy it and paste it into a word processor document, and save the document with your name somewhere in the file name. 
    2. If you are not yet a Fresno State student:  Most U.S. universities allow students to access their academic records online, in a way similar to the way described above for Fresno State students.  Contact your institution’s registrar to find out how to access your unofficial transcript and follow the process described above.  If you have transcripts from more than one institution, please copy them all and paste them into one document, as PageUp only allows one document to be uploaded into the link for transcripts.  Make certain that each institution is clearly indicated within this document.

The California State University Instructional Student Assistant Classification and Qualification Standards

  • Evaluations: ISA's may be evaluated per CBA, Unit 11, Article 8 
  • Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The Salary range for Instructional Student Assistants starts at $17.86 per an hour. 
  • Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the candidate.
  • Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11, a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department Instructional Student Assistant position.
  • Instructional Student Assistant positions are for matriculated students at Fresno State. 
  • Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.
